Magic the Gathering Celebrity Cup - Behind The Scenes

Welcome back to the Creative Awards London blog where we bring you the very best in our bespoke awards and trophies. Card games, one of the oldest forms of entertainment. Dating back over a millennum some scholars believe that playing cards originated in Tang Dynasty China in the 9th century. A favourite of pubs, private clubs and basements across the World playing cards come in all shapes and forms. In today’s blog entry, we cosplay up, cast our spells and completely geek out with our latest award with the Magic The Gathering Celebrity Trophy.

Magic the gathering celebrity cup For those unfamiliar with the hugely popular, high octane and high-fantasy game, let us give you a brief summary. Launched in 1993 the game sees participants play as planeswalkers, thats wizards to you normies, who cast spells, use artifacts, and summon creatures as in order to defeat their opponents. The game has spawned a huge, dedicated fandom with over 20 million players reported in 2015 and shows no signs of slowing down. Not only that, but the cards themselves have become revered as collectors items with rare cards such The Black Lotus going for upwards of £3,000 at auction. Tournaments have been held, a mythical culture surrounding the game has evolved and dedicated legions of fans flock to MTG conventions.

We were tasked with designing a trophy for the latest Magic The Gathering Celebrity Cup which pits 36 influencer celebrities and Magic expert players from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom in a head to head battle on behalf of their countries. The two day event took place from the 11th to the 13th of July and was live streamed via dedicated channels for each country. The influencers, who were all newcomers to the series, had to quickly learn the rules and strategies of the game to assist their pro player and do their country proud.

MTG: Celebrity Cup TrophyCreative Awards London channelled our inner mages and designed a bespoke trophy that would go down in MTG lore. The custom made metal award features the iconic pitchfork of the series, instantly recognisable to millions across the globe, with colour matched paint applied. The weighty trophy, a nod to the tactile nature of the game, features two interlocking profiled pieces of metal and sits proudly on a throne like base - ready to be hoisted aloft by the winners.
